“Low-tech, high-touch.” That’s how Greta Gill, a certified nurse-midwife and director of midwifery at Tucson’s El Rio Health, describes the care at El Rio Birth and Women’s Health Center, but the phrase also encapsulates the essence of the midwifery profession.
“Birth is more than a medical procedure,” says Kathryn Schrag, a certified nurse-midwife who cofounded Tucson’s first free-stranding birth center with Mariann Shinoskie, in 1982. “It’s a tremendously powerful moment in a woman’s and a family’s life. And how she’s ushered through pregnancy and birth can have a profound social implication for her sense of power, autonomy, confidence, and how she raises her children.”
