El Rio employs over 1,800 individuals and residents will have the pleasure of working with many of them.

There is also a group of long-tenured leaders providing daily guidance and oversite. Get to know the leaders working closely with our Family Medicine Residents.

    

Edward J. Schwager, MD, FAAFP - Program Director

Dr. Schwager is a Tucson native who joined the El Rio Family Medicine residency in 2017 because of his passion to teaching residents and students. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics.

Dr. Schwager’s multi-year career encompassed a variety of situations solo and family medicine group practices to administrative medicine. He is a past-president of the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians and a former board chair of the Arizona Medical Board.  Throughout most of his career he practiced broad spectrum family medicine including maternity care, in-patient medicine and office-based care.

Dr. Schwager’s special interests include medically complicated patients, office dermatologic and gynecologic procedures and practice management. He is the faculty lead for our developing Point of Care Ultrasound training, didactics, and geriatrics. His medical practice at the residency includes patients who have seen him for more than 30 years. Dr. Schwager’s hobbies include recumbent trike cycling, music, time with family, and fine dining.

Felipe R. Perez, MD, FAAFP - Core Faculty

Dr. Perez grew up in rural Arizona. He was inspired to become a physician because of the healthcare deficiencies in his community. His goal is to make healthcare affordable and assessable to everyone. In 2013, he spearheaded the creation of the The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education’s National family medicine residency program at El Rio Health to help address physician shortage. Dr. Perez believes it is important for physicians to get involved to shape the future of healthcare and he served on several leadership positions in medical school and in residency. He currently serves as an Outside Medical Consultant for the Arizona Medical Board, faculty for a national GME conference, committee member with the National Association of Community Health Centers, active member of Arizona Medical Association and the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians Legislative Task Force and oversees the Southern Arizona Area Health Education Center. Dr. Perez is the Designated Institutional Officer for El Rio Health’s residency programs. He now wants to share his passion for medicine and advocacy with the next generation of doctors.

Tammy Timmons, MD - Key Faculty

Dr. Timmons moved to Tucson in the early nineties, and this has been her home since. She completed a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona in 2003 and then graduated medical school from the University of Arizona in 2007. She attended the UA Family Medicine Residency program from 2007-2010. In 2010 she began working for El Rio Health where she has worked since.

Tucson has been her home for almost 30 years. She loves the small community feel, the beautiful scenery and the amazing people. El Rio provides an amazing opportunity to give back to Tucson and care for those most at need. She is married to an amazing husband and has three great kids.

Joy Mockbee, MD - Key Faculty

Dr. Mockbee has been providing primary care to her patients for 25 years and continues to be energized by the innovation and mission of community health centers. She attended medical school at University of Arizona and completed a Master of Public Health at Harvard. She did residency at the Ventura County Medical Center Family Medicine, then returned home to Tucson.

Dr. Mockbee has been Medical Director for Family Medicine since 2003, working on clinician workforce development and support, efficient operations, quality improvement and population health, research collaborations, and program development. Her clinical interests are weight management, care of people experiencing homelessness, employee and patient wellness, and behavioral health.

In 2015, Dr. Mockbee became Board Certified in Obesity Medicine through the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She has collaborated with a multidisciplinary group to develop El Rio’s Weight Management programs for adults and children.   Her interests outside of medicine are spending time with family, bicycling, backpacking, running and being outside.

Huy Tran, DO - Key Faculty

Dr. Tran is a family physician at El Rio Health. Dr. Tran graduated from Sacramento State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences and a minor in Chemistry. Pursuing a passion for medicine, Dr. Tran went on to earn a medical degree from Touro University in Nevada. Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Tran completed a Family Medicine residency at the Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education in Tucson, Arizona. After completion of residency in 2016, Dr. Tran began practicing medicine at El Rio Health. Dr. Tran is board-certified in family medicine.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Tran is actively involved in medical education, serving as faculty for the Family Medicine Residency Program and teaching medical students from A.T. Still University and the University of Arizona. His area of interests includes caring for the underserved, office procedures and weight management.

Dr. Tran remains committed to serving the Tucson community and contributing to the ongoing success of the Family Medicine program at El Rio Health.

Joshua Goodman, DO - Key Faculty

Dr. Goodman received his BA from Azusa Pacific University. While there he volunteered at a community health center in Escondido, CA and developed an interest in community medicine. He then attended Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale, AZ for medical school. His passion for community medicine led him to The Wright Center National Family Medicine residency where he completed his family medicine residency at El Rio Health.

After completing his residency as Chief Resident, Dr. Goodman was excited to remain at El Rio Health, practicing family medicine and serving the Tucson community. While seeing his own patients, Dr. Goodman also serves as an attending physician for the family medicine residency and precepts medical students. He is an associate clinical professor at the A.T. Still School of Osteopathic Medicine and the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

Ray Wagner, MD Key Faculty - Pediatrics

Dr. Wagner holds a BA from Vanderbilt University, and MS with research thesis from Rice University.  He received his MD from Texas Tech University School of Medicine where he completed his Pediatric residency. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Following 10 years in private practice and 8 years in academic practice, in 2003 Dr. Wagner joined El Rio Health as a staff pediatrician where he continues to see patients from underserved communities in Southern AZ and actively teaches family medicine residents.

Since July 2009 he has served as the Regional Director of Medical Education for ATSU-SOMA osteopathic medical students based at El Rio Health. Dr. Wagner has recently been appointed Associate Director of Medical Education at the El Rio Health Teaching Health Center Consortium and is directly involved in the clinical training and management of Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and APRN Residency Programs at El Rio CHC. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona.
