[0:05] Patient 01: They knew that I wanted to have more of a natural experience.
[0:09] Patient 02: They’re very conscious of your birth plan.
[0:12] Patient 03: I considered midwifery because I really wanted, just, an intimate birth experience.
[0:17] Patient 04: They are very open and welcoming, and the midwives are really loving and understanding.
[0:26] Greta Gill: My name is Greta Gill, I’m a Certified Nurse Midwife, and I’m the Director of Midwifery for El Rio Community Health Center. A Certified Nurse Midwife is a board-certified Nurse Practitioner, so we are Registered Nurses who have had advanced training in midwifery, the care of women in pregnancy, birth, and afterwards.
[0:49] Patient 02: When you decide to give birth at the birth center, what you expect is it to feel like home.
[0:55] Patient 03: It’s like you’re in a room, so it had a…a bed, again it had the birthing tub, and it has women that have been trained and done a lot of births, so they have a lot of experience just like the OBs, so they’re very well educated.
[1:09] Patient 05: The midwife that worked with me through my entire pregnancy did have hospital privileges, and she ended up being the one to deliver my first born, which was fantastic. So I got the same person from pre…from prenatal care to delivery, and even after.
[1:23] Patient 06: You know it’s scary for people, and so to have somebody who, you know, is a woman, who’s been through it before, who does it with a lot of, you know, uh, sensitivity.
[1:34] Greta Gill: We have incredible compassion for the people that come to us, from all walks of life.
[1:40] Patient 04: I think I really grew up…um, with the El Rio family, especially since I was born and then my pediatric was here, my dental was here, so it was, it’s more of um…a traditional thing of being here at the El Rio.
[1:55] Patient 06: El Rio started as a small community health center for the local area, and it had midwifery from the beginning.
[2:05] Patient 03: I think midwifery is for everyone. Um, I think it’s a wonderful option.
[2:10] Patient 05: They knew that I knew what was best for my body and for my baby.
[2:13] Patient 01: People say, well do I have to do what you did, where I do a no-drug birth. I think that scares some women. And I said that the really great thing about the midwife care is that they have all options.
[2:22] Patient 02: They really do want to do your birth plan. They don’t push their beliefs or anything on you. They want to do it how you want to.
[2:30] Midwife 01: This is, uh, a wonderful event in the life of a family, and…and I feel like it’s very sacred that we’re allowed into that space.
[2:40] Unidentified patient voice: That experience just let me, um, again naturally go through the childbirth process in a more comfortable way.
[2:47] Patient 05: Uh, the most positive aspect of the prenatal care I received here at El Rio was definitely the staff. Everybody made me feel really good about my decision and like I was making the best choices for my baby.
[2:57] Midwife 02: It was very empowering, giving another woman that strength in a time when you feel weak, when you feel like this baby is just going to come out, and I’m so scared because I’ve never done this before. I hope that they feel like it’s going to be okay.
[3:17] Greta Gill: El Rio as a community health center is here to serve the community’s needs, and we want to do that with the best possible medical research, with all the resources that we have, and the compassion.

A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a specialist in normal pregnancy and childbirth, family planning and preventive healthcare for women and pregnant people. Nurse-midwives are advanced practice nurses certified by the American Midwifery Certification board with privileges to prescribe medications and admit pregnant people to the hospital.
Worldwide, developed nations with midwife-led maternity care have the safest and healthiest maternal child outcomes. El Rio nurse midwives lead the maternity care team, which may include nurses, obstetricians, maternal fetal-medicine specialists, nutritionists, lactation consultants, pharmacists and more.
Our Philosophy of Care
Midwifery is an ancient profession, assisting and guiding the childbirth process. Modern certified nurse midwives are highly skilled professionals who treat pregnancy as a natural event in the life of a family. Our model of care is holistic, focusing on wellness, education and prevention. Every family we care for is unique, and we take the time to listen, discuss choices and answer questions in order to provide quality and compassionate care. We take pride in creating positive, empowering experiences for our patients and their families.
Birth Care:
We attend births at Tucson Medical Center either in Labor & Delivery or at The Midwifery Center, supporting patients in experiencing childbirth as they wish, with the pain relief they choose. The Midwifery Center offers an intimate and supportive environment for natural childbirth with comfortable, homelike birthing rooms.
Our midwifery care includes: Well-Woman care, waterbirth, childbirth classes, BabyLove Group, as well as STD testing and family planning.
